About Us
Carlton Gardens Primary School was built in 1884. Its history and
traditions are highly valued by the Carlton and Melbourne communities.
One parent has described our school as a village. “Its
small size means that the students, staff
and many of the parents know each other and together create a close-knit
community working to achieve our collective educational goals”.
This village is a ‘particularly Australian’ village
welcoming students recently arrived from many different cultures
together with students of grandparents and parents who also attended
this village over past decades.
In 1984 a history of the school was published. Copies of Rathdowne
Street 1884-1984: A Centennial History are available at the school.
The school is structured into multi-age classrooms. These vary from
year to year depending on student numbers: for details please
contact the school.
School Vision
Carlton Gardens Primary School provides a safe and challenging learning environment, caring teachers, and enjoyment within a multicultural
and diverse setting. CGPS caters for both local and international
students who are all encouraged to contribute to the global community.
Priorities and goals are set after active consultation with everyone
involved in the life of the school.
Literacy and Numeracy are the focus of multi-age learning at CGPS.
Students also engage in a range of Integrated Studies, including
Computer Technology, ensuring the curriculum has breadth and depth.
Our location makes our specialist programs unique. Sport, Science
and Performing Arts are linked to Education Programs through the
University of Melbourne. LOTE celebrates Chinese language and culture. The Visual Arts are enriched through
links with the National Gallery of Victoria, and our proximity to
the Melbourne Museum and Carlton Gardens provides an invaluable
learning environment for all.
Families have the convenience of an Out of Hours Care and School
Holiday Program and are encouraged to play an active role in the
school community through a Parents Club.
CGPS accepts enrolments from all areas of Melbourne and beyond.
